Will wrote:The plans for the new $146 million 5 level rehabilitation building, new psychogeriatric building and the new 5 level staff carpark are before the state government DAC.

This proposal is designed to facilitate the transfer of services from the Repat.

The plans are available:

http://www.dac.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/ ... 15_opt.pdf
A few things not mentioned in the proposal:

- The original proposal was for a 10 level carpark, but not everyone was happy with that (especially since the hospital is 7 floors).
- The location of a new hospice to replace Daw House is yet to be confirmed, so there could be further developments at FMC.
- The original plans mentioned in the original Transforming Health proposal included demolishing the child care centre and moving it. The plans indicate that it is staying now.

Sods turned on Adelaide's controversial Repat Hospital replacement
The controversial closure of Adelaide's Repatriation General Hospital is a step closer, with construction beginning on its replacement at the Flinders Medical Centre in the city's south.

A 55-bed rehabilitation facility and a 15-room palliative care centre are being built at one of Adelaide's busiest hospitals.

Associate Professor Craig Whitehead from the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network said despite the affection for old Daw Park repat hospital, the new facility would be significantly better for patients.

"There is obviously a nostalgic element around Daw House because it's a fine old building, but the interior quality of the accommodation needs to be substantially improved and that's been one of the great opportunities of this build," he said.

"The new build gives people single rooms, and I think if you're in the last phase of life, where a lot of our patients in the hospice are, that access to a single room where people can concentrate on their own family is quite important".....

Not that I'd want to accuse the government of spin, but they're only building the car park.

They've removed a few hundred carparks while the building goes up, and they're using Flinders Uni car parks to cater for staff demand in the mean time. The new car park is due to be finished just before O week.

------------

EDIT 20/1/16: Seems that the carpark-first plan is off the table, or was never actually on the cards.

FMC staff were told to they were going to have to park at Tonsley during construction and get a shuttle bus, and they weren't happy. Then everyone thinks that the carpark is being built super quick, and now everyone's going to have to park at Tonsley once teaching starts at the Uni.

I have no idea if a swifty has been done, if the rumour mill is in overdrive or if they've just changed their minds. It's been ridiculously hard to tell fact from fiction in the past 12 months, as both change daily.

Some pictures of site work at FMC as at 14 Feb 2016. A new site spread over several levels is being carved out of the hill side just south of the existing buildings.

I drove past yesterday and there was a crane base on the northern edge of the site. I couldn't see any tower pieces so I doubt it will be fully assembled for some time.

Three tower cranes? I didn't think the site was large enough to warrant that many. Is that something to do with the elevation changes across the site or am I simply underestimating its size?
