What are the demographics of people who want to live in a 67 storey apartment building at Paramatta? Would the same kind of people show up if one was build at Marion or Elizabeth?

Well, Sydney has 6 million people... that's for starters. They're not all going to live in the CBD. The Sydney CBD is starting to run out of room for new developments so they have to build elsewhere.

Whereas we've got ample development space in our CBD. 67 storey buildings are not needed in Salisbury or Marion for the next 100 years.

So do NSW people want to live in 67-storey apartment buildings but SA people don't? There's a lot of land in NSW without houses on it too. Maybe there would be SA people who would like to live in a shoebox in a tower with coastal views on one side and hills on the other too. If these are a solution for homelessness, then perhaps every state government should build a few scattered though the state's poorer areas and near employment centres. I've read and heard of several regional employers lately that the business expansion had to include building accommodation blocks or houses to enable possible recruitment. Maybe not 67 stories or apartments, but I come with the mindset of owner-occupier detached housing and have no idea if that's the only way other people think.

Parramatta, North Sydney and Chatswood are the only places outside the Sydney CBD getting 50+ storey apartment towers. In those locations it makes sense as those are emerging satellite business districts. Parramatta in particular has emerged as an alternative location for professional services businesses to set up main or secondary offices.

Perhaps we need a couple of large white collar employers and a tower of shoeboxes to house the workers at Elizabeth, instead of making them commute from their own blocks of land at Roseworthy or Riverlea.

the funny thing about these peri urban developments is that their justification is to give people the dream of their big block of land and house. But when you look at what is built, they have this tiny sliver of grass at the back and 80%+ of the block is totally built out.

What I haven't worked out is what the people actually want, and to a lesser extent why that is what they want.

Twelve years ago when looking for a new house, we asked about "large blocks". We were shown sites in the 600 square metre range, and when we pointed out that wasn't large, the salesman assured us that nobody wanted larger blocks than that, despite the people standing in front of him asking for exactly that so we would have space for some fruit trees and a garden. We bought 1200 m2 in a different estate, with mature (regulated) trees included.

If you really want to postage stamp size blocks of land on the edge of civilisation in Melbourne check out Donney Brook or even further from town Wallan both north east from Melbourne CBD. 10 years ago Donney Brook had 3 houses and a pub now it has 1003 houses and a pub. Both Donny Brook and Wallan are beyond the electric rail.
