Little ideas for a big city
Re: Little ideas for a big city
Walked past Gresham Place at the top end of KWS yesterday. Noticed it serves no real purpose. There's no doors into either building. Access to buildings facing Gresham St can be via Hindley St or North Terrace. Seems a no brainer to close to traffic, pave & place some trees & seats. Maybe a pergola/arbor and grow vines over it.
Was this the location of the outside "splash adelaide" event run by Saldechin last year? If so the ACC could generate revenue by leasing to Saldechin and having outside dining year round.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Yes, that's where Saldechin set up their outside bar area. From what I heard, it severely restricted access to the carpark behind for people working at Origin.
Re: Little ideas for a big city
I work in the Origin building, and drive to work daily. The access restrictions are minimal, it is not a significant problem.Nathan wrote:Yes, that's where Saldechin set up their outside bar area. From what I heard, it severely restricted access to the carpark behind for people working at Origin.
The bigger problem is that it is fronted by a high rise building to the North, hence it is dark and in shade for most of the day. Ok in summer, not pleasant at all in winter.

It didn't look like a significant problem to me either, but I had a few friends who work for Origin complaining about it Possibly overreacting.ml69 wrote:I work in the Origin building, and drive to work daily. http://www.pps.org/about/team/ekent/THE city needs 10 key destinations and 10 reasons to visit each destination, according to the man who transformed Times Square.
In a whirlwind trip to Adelaide last week, international "placemaking" expert Ethan Kent said the city needed to adopt a Power of 10 model where it established 10 good places with at least 10 things to do or reasons to visit each place.
Under the model, the city must have 10 precincts, such as the East End, West End and Adelaide Central Market, with 10 areas or streets in each precinct, such as Rundle St and Leigh St.
Each precinct or area must also have at least 10 activities or reasons to visit, such as outdoor dining, live music and street art.
"Adelaide is one of the most beautiful cities but at the human scale, it is lacking in some ways," Mr Kent said. "But having a focus on place can change the whole focus of the city, starting with low cost things like Splash Adelaide."
The Project for Public Spaces vice president, who is based in New York, was in town last week after attending a conference in Sydney.
Over the past 14 years, he has helped transform hundreds of car-dominated precincts across the world into people-friendly places, such as New York's Times Square and Meatpacking District.
Mr Kent presented his Power of 10 concept to the City Council, which plans to partner with businesses, community groups, artists and other groups to deliver on the model.
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Re: Little ideas for a big city
i'm interpreting 'Adelaide' to mean the greater metro area, and a bit beyond.
So you can include the Barossa & McLaren Vale with a host of 100+ top-notch cellar doors and restaurants (i'm too lazy to list them).
Hahndorf is another Adelaide Hills attraction. As is the Piccadilly Valley, Bridgewater Mill and Mt Lofty House (for lunch) and a visit to the Mt Lofty lookout
Semaphore Rd Semaphore has recently become a destination in its own right. Ride the little train, or ride your bike along KMs of boardwalk.
North Terrace (east of KWS) and all it has to offer (museum, art, botanic gardens, etc) is another standalone destination.
Would you classify Rundle Mall as another standalone destination?
Maslins Nude Beach (apparently not too many legal nude beaches in Oz)
Under Adelaide Tunnel Tour (this should be more widely promoted - a few of us S-A folk did the tour a while back)
Visit the Haighs Choc factory on Greenhill Rd
Visit the Paris Quarter. We should promote the SE corner of the CBD in this way. No other australian city has a 'Parisian' alignment. Definitely something we can attach to our gentrified lifestyle.
North Adelaide should fit into the CBD top 10 somehow.

Re: Little ideas for a big city
i was pondering the above 10 by 10 idea, and it dawned on me that Adelaide CBD kinda looks like a chess/checker board, or even the 5 side of a die (singular of dice) due to our 5 squares.
Realise this probably best suits casino advertising, but SATC could do an Ad campaign with a checker board overlaid on Adelaide cbd with the motto - it's your move, or something like that. Jumping from one place to another. Be knighted or crowned on king william st, etc.
Be gentle, i'm just thinking out loud...

Would make for some great adds. Kind of like the ball of wool in Melbourne, but better and more relevant.
Re: Little ideas for a big city
special visa to lure big money. Wonder if other states have similar?
South Australian introduces new business visa to lure investors to state
A NEW business migration visa will be offered from today for investors willing to contribute $5 million to the state's economy.
The Significant Investor Visa has been introduced as a new stream within the Business Innovation and Investment visa and will be offered through Immigration SA.
Migrants successful in obtaining the four-year Significant Investor Visa will need to invest at least $3 million over two years into State-based companies.
They then have a choice to invest the remaining $2 million over four years in any combination of eligible managed funds, South Australian Government Financing Authority (SAFA) bonds or additional private company investment.
Visa holders must live in Australia for at least 40 days every year, or 160 days cumulatively, over their four-year visa term.
The visa can be extended by two year periods and is not subject to a points test, upper age requirement or English language threshold requirement.
Minister Tom Koutsantonis said the visa would help "simplify the pathway for the most experienced business people and high-profile investors to relocate here".
"This is a crucial time for our economy and it is imperative we are equipped to attract international capital and skills in a competitive global market."
The visa would help migrants take advantage of the opportunities in the resources and energy sectors, advanced manufacturing, clean technologies, tourism and knowledge-intensive industries, he said.

The nwe Smart Move Strategy from the ACC has a tick-tack-toe theme around its nine direction. I think you may have some sort of telepathic powers.Wayno wrote:i was pondering the above 10 by 10 idea, and it dawned on me that Adelaide CBD kinda looks like a chess/checker board, or even the 5 side of a die (singular of dice) due to our 5 squares.

Anyone who's spent time in London will know of the Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park. i'd like similar in Adelaide, but not sure where. Needs to be distant enough to not bother folk, but close enough so those interested can conveniently drop by. Any ideas? The set up cost would be negligible.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speakers%27_Corner
Sydney, Brisbane & Melbourne already have similar.

Re: Little ideas for a big city
Maybe as part of a revitalised Festival Plaza, or open up the Government House gardens to the public and include in there?
