The rail component of the Northern Connector was to move rail freight out of the suburbs, it had nothing to do with passenger trains.

If you want to run passenger services to the growing areas of Virginia, Two Wells and Riverlea the rail corridor is already there with room to expand
We know. I'm saying there should have been a rail (passenger) line down the middle of the connector.

My question is what is there to gain by spending many million of $ to redirect the standard gauge corridor along the NE?

It is comparable to standardising the suburban network. With no freight access anymore, there is little point to doing so. Perhaps it might be more practical once all the electric sets are delivered, to avoid having to convert diesel sets that are about to be retired. The media would have a field day. Perhaps it's best to announce it just before an election.

The main advantage would be in grade separation. Suburban trains can handle higher grades than freight trains. This means that it is possible to grade separate intersections that would otherwise not be possible (e.g. Park Terrace) and reduce the cost of grade separation at others.

Come to think of it, there is a 1 in 66 incline just before Salisbury. So building a rail underpass would require less earthworks than what it would seem like. The challenge though is dealing with the Para river, as well as the Salisbury Hwy underpass just to the north.

Hence an overpass would be a better solution, duh.

Or Park Terrace can be put in a box culvert under the rail line.

If you wanted a steep narrow underpass like Rosetta Street, sure. There's no easy way to build an adequate underpass for Park Terrace beneath the railway line without cutting off access to the streets and shops immediately adjacent.

The easiest and most likely result would be a skyrail for Park Terrace and Salisbury station until just after the river. Might be lucky and they'll continue it through Nurlutta station as well.

The road network in Salisbury centre is a dog's breakfast and could do with an overhaul. Land uses need some updating also, especially being so close to public transit. The Eureka and Stockade Taverns either side of the station contribute to a lot of issues, especially at night. These issues then filter throughout inner Salisbury and some local residential streets.

I do prefer the idea of skyrail, especially as this can improve physical access opportunities across the line, enable a modernised and improved Salisbury railway station and improve nearby access to locations such as Salisbury Oval and Northern Community Mental Health. An ambitious project would see Chidda station elevated also, and open up a new connection between Spains/Frost Road, allowing for a new interchange. Nurlutta should be culled to speed up services, but it does sit in an employment area. Catch-22.

The con is that transport mode change will be less immediate and more difficult at the Salisbury Interchange.

Who knows how many years we may all need to wait for this mess to be finally finished.

Going by labors budget infrastructure projects in especially NON EASTERN STATES is not exactly priority - MUCH MORE IMPORTANT to them is WINNING A FEW VOTES FROM YOUNG FAMILIIES, PENSIONERS etc because the GENERAL POPULATION is going to feel PAIN due to HIGH INTEREST RATES, POWER PRICES and COST OF LIVING PRESSURES - mostly due BENDING OVER TO CLIMATE CHANGE NUTTERS and crazy overseas politics.

State Labor has already reframed the north-south motorway as being a commuter project rather than primarily directed at freight efficiency. Federal Labor seems to have identified ALL transport infrastructure projects that haven't actually started building yet as Liberal pork-barrelling so unnecessary because it included a car park in a marginal seat in Melbourne.

It seems to be hidden that improving freight efficiency benefits everyone who buys anything. It's a long time since the Adelaide Metropolitan trains carried parcels in the baggage car between the Red Hens. We rely on road transport for all urban freight now.

The previous state Liberal government's plan was fully funded and was due to start shortly. Unfortunately we're now stuck with Kouts who is well out of his depth, and costs will blow out by an additional $4b with construction not due to start until 2025.

If Kouts is out of his depth what was Cory Wingard…. He couldn’t even deliver a BMX bike track right before getting torn to shreds after first use. He also thought privatising the rail service would save the state $1B.

Do you agree with no right turns on Anzac highway? Do you agree with half baked tunnel exit/s?

The liberal plan would never have come out on budget and unlikely on time also.

I’m not saying what Labor has or is doing is great in this regard, but let’s wait and see the final design before passing judgement.

Paywall article in the advertiser today about the possibility of the tunnels being scrapped altogether. Trench or surface level freeway only.
