I hear that there will be some major development work to be announced at Uni SA's City East campus. Not open knowledge yet but said to include a major new library building and another 6 level one on North Tce. Apparently some Health Science coursess are also moving to City West, to be near the new hospital. Together with the proposed apartment building in Liverpool St, it will become a pretty busy hub for people, learning and additional services / shopping, while also filling in some of those vacant blocks / carparks.
Hopefully some pretty exciting construction times ahead along the full length of North Tce from KWS through to West Tce.

City West, for those who don't know was originally built to become a prison. I went to Uni SA, this is apparently common knowledge amongst the facality, so hear me out.
Those who designed the Uni, figured that by the early 00's most people would be studying their course online. Few people would need to come into the Uni at all and that eventually the Uni site would become redundant. Of course, this was very silly as learning works best when you have others, your piers to bounce off of. The west campus has its main focus in the arts and business, so learning is best when amongst others where ideas, and creativity are much easier to expand upon, as apose to staying at home and learning/practising it all by yourself.
The jail like design is eveident throughout. This is why the design for the West campus is so bleak. The railing is so strong, hardy, the rooms are all bland beige and very square and poky (and all alligned up like cells). And just look at the design, it is very much like that of a jail. Before the new buildings were recently put inplace, there was so few tables for people to sit and eat outside, just big paved concrete areas. Only recently has the campus upped its game in tihs regard. But there are now green splace to help facilitate a studious environment. Heck, even the outside looks like the remand centre, only a few streets over!
And since the west campus was built in the early 90's, Uni SA has only grown and expanded, bringing most of its suburban campusus, and merging them into city east and west. So a face list is more than welcome and very much on the cards for the western campus. The new buildings have been wonderful, I hope more innovative design like this will be put in place.

LOL! That story has really suffered from a case of the Chinese whispers over the past 13 years.
The original blueberry, custard and terracotta buildings were built in 1997 near the remand centre. But that's the only link to a prison. There was a rumour when I was there in 2000 that the firm who designed City West had also designed a prison, but I never found proof of that. I was also told that they had designed the Bicentennial Conservatory in the Botanic gardens. What was true however, was the architecture was designed with the the idea to keep people moving. The designers didn't want any "filthy students" cluttering their hallways, so all the corridors were built in such a way that they kept people walking through and then off campus. very business like as opposed to the bohemian Adelaide Uni.
And it worked. When I was there, there was very little post-lecture or post-tute life. Students came, attended and left. The newer architecture has tried to soften this effect, with the subsequent administration's change in this view.

$95 million City West Student Learning Centre
$95 million City West student learning centre wins support to build SA's workforce capacity
Expanding its commitment to Adelaide as an education city and the provision of high quality facilities supporting engaged student learning, UniSA has secured $30 million from the Federal Government’s Education Investment Fund for a new $95 million learning centre, serving more than 15,000 students in the heart of Adelaide’s West End.
The project planned at UniSA’s City West campus will be a state-of-the-art, seven-storey, Five Green Star-rated building designed to improve student learning experiences and services and will have the capacity to accommodate a further 1,800 students in the CBD.
Students from a wide range of degree programs will benefit from the new facility and the project will support the University’s plans to increase student participation levels in line with the Federal Government’s targets.
UniSA Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Høj says the new building represents a confident investment in the future intellectual capital of the state and in UniSA as a significant contributor to enhancing student participation in higher education.
“Following the announcement of $40M in support for our high-tech $73M Minerals and Materials initiative at Mawson Lakes, http://www.sensational-adelaide.com/for ... f=8&t=3053, this Federal funding is yet another vote of confidence in UniSA and in our goal to take a leading role in the development of Australia’s higher education system as one of the best in the world,” he said.
The Centre will support an increase in student numbers at City West in areas of key economic and cultural growth – allied health and health sciences, business and the arts and creative industries – underpinning growth in the state’s talent pool.
“Over the past 12 years the construction of the City West campus, including the recently completed Hawke and Dorrit Black buildings and the multi award-winning Kaurna Building, has revitalised the West End of the city and consolidated an education and research focus in the heart of the city,” Prof Høj says.
“The new Centre will augment and complement other developments already forecast in the precinct and sustain valuable synergies for students and researchers with important projects such as the new federally funded $200M South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute and the proposed new Royal Adelaide Hospital.
“Our vision for the future of Adelaide as an education city is to build the kind of critical mass that influences the feel of the city.
“It is about having excellent facilities that heighten awareness, aspiration and achievement in higher education in an environment that promotes creativity and engagement.”
The new seven-storey Centre will provide teaching and learning space with a special focus on a technology-rich environment and flexible learning spaces that enhance experiential learning.
The new Centre will also include a significant expansion of the University’s City West Library.
“We want to give UniSA students a study environment that genuinely prepares them for the working world now and into the future and to continue to provide excellent graduates to underpin the expansion and development of the South Australian economy,” he said.
