Second crane is being increased in height this evening

and I for one think it is now a much better and more accessible public space than that soulless and tired plaza that it replaced

Of note re: plaza, several collapsable umbrellas (in similar style to steel trees) have been recently installed. Evidently, not enough shade planned (though, as above, still an improvement).

It was soulless and tired because it had been neglected and allowed to decay for decades (some might say so that it was seen as disposable and could be redeveloped)

The areas of the plaza currently accessible certainly are more inviting, and hopefully they avoid the neglect that projects like these often see once they're no longer the new hotness. See the landscaping and water features on and around the neighbouring footbridge and how quickly they were abandoned.

The Plaza area is an absolute joke.

What a completely missed opportunity to turn the space into something usable.

2-3 years of work and for what? some metal trees and a horrible poorly designed car park?

Embarrassing
The car park is a disgrace and is actually unusable for Festival Theatre events.

When we saw 9 to 5 there the other week, it took close to 30 minutes getting into the car park, meaning we nearly missed the start of the show (and this was with the theatre only being about 40-45% full). At the end of the show, it took about 20 minutes to pay for parking, about another 10 minutes to get a lift down to the car, and another 25 minutes to get out.

The Festival Theatre would be better off telling their patrons to not use the car park for shows.

I haven't parked there so I'm not quite understanding why? Many carparks around Rundle Mall can take a long time to exit at peak times, but never 30 mins just to enter.

It once took me just short of an hour to leave. It’s a terrible design.

The car park doesn’t work because of the number of parks available vs. number of access points for cars. Also, the high volume of cars entering and exiting the car park are for select times (i.e. leading up to a performance or at the end of a performance). Whereas any car park of similar size in the CBD is taking in staggered volumes of cars throughout any given day (even during peak hour). This car park didn’t need to be as big as it is, the area sufficed previously without the sheer number of car parks it has now (from 300 to 1,200), even with the casino and Walker development, they could have settled for double what was there previously.

I was at the theatre the other night and noticed that in burying the Festival Theatre somewhat, they’ve left some of the ailing features of the theatre intact (namely around by the stage door) hiding behind or underneath the new ’ground’ level, I also noticed that it appears to already have significant leaking issues around this area also. Makes you wonder whether this area was ever intended to be engineered this way, or if it’s mere cost cutting.

I am starting to realise that Walker Corp is quite a cheap and nasty developer.

Buckland Park as a whole and the set of new traffic lights (ugh) on Port Wakefield Road is a good example of this.

Very true. Festival Plaza = Bad infrastructure and features in the wrong place
Buckland Park = No infrastructure, public trans in place, built on floodplains.

If we can't trust them to build a building, why trust them to build a suburb?
