That is not good news at all. Better get down there and get your photos while you still can. Does anyone know what is happening / has happened to all the internal fittings?? Chairs, signs, etc

I think its good news, they could knock it down and build a 3-4 level new restaraunt / shopping complex.
Re: #U/C: | Bay Junction | $60m | 3lvls | Retail | Glenelg
On what grounds would you heritage list it? Is it unique, historic or aesthetically pleasing? So far all I can see is a rather bland and generic commercial structure. I'm happy to be proven wrong.
On the long list of heritage sites the state has to offer, the cinema seems to have nothing to add IMO. I think the heritage claim was NIMBYism by another means.

Sentiment and emotion can often get confused with grounds for heritage.

In its original single-screen Ozone Theatre configuration, it would be certainly worth saving, but over the years too much has been lost for it to genuinely warrant saving. The lobbies and delightful curved staircases did have a certain charm, and it's always a shame to lose examples of over-engineered buildings with their massively thick walls and chunky details, but I doubt it could be made into anything worthwhile without a lot of money spent on a damn good restoration and reconstruction.

To those who say its not worth saving, I think it is. It's one of a few "significant" buildings in the area which have historic appeal. I wouldn't want Glenelg to be all modern-day podboxes and beige apartment towers.

I check it out today - its nothing to get excited about at this stage.
There's two stores open woolworths & woolworths liquor. Everything else is closed off.
I don't want to sound negative but from what I saw it didn't seem to be much different
to what used to be there befroe the redevelopment.

The most obvious difference is the carpark out the front is missing, the new building flooding onto the footpath.
Can't say I like it, but it wasn't finished when I went past last week so I reserve judgement.

I thought it was going to be a 2 level mall. Turns out it's just a tiny little arcade with hardly any shops in it.
Once again, Adelaide misses a great development opportunity.

Apparently renamed to Bayside Village, with the post office moving there from Moseley Square:

THE heritage-listed Glenelg Post Office is likely to be sold after Australia Post moves into the new Bayside Village Shopping Centre this month.

Are you serious?Mr Hogben also contacted Hindmarsh MHR Steve Georganas (Labor) calling on the Federal Government to halt what he said was an “arrogant and unjustifiable move”.
“If anything, there is now greater need for the Moseley Square post office, rather than less,” he wrote.
If people are that lazy to walk 500m up the road, then thats their problem.
What are the federal goverment going to do?

They don't even have to walk. They can take the tram to the Brighton Road tram stop. And to make things easier, the journey between Jetty Road and Brighton Road is free.crawf wrote:Are you serious?Mr Hogben also contacted Hindmarsh MHR Steve Georganas (Labor) calling on the Federal Government to halt what he said was an “arrogant and unjustifiable move”.

Some people will whinge about anything. That's precisely why it's so hard to get anything decent built in Adelaide.
