Whitmore Square - Iparrityi Strategic Property Review

Project Overview

The Salvation Army (TSA) is undertaking a strategic property review of its landholding on the corner of Gilbert and Morphett Streets and Whitmore Square - Iparrityi, Adelaide.

The review is seeking to achieve an innovative, contemporary and high-quality design response that accommodates improved facilities to enhance and broaden the social mission support services offered on-site.

This response will align with cultural values and establish a sense of place and purpose that facilitates healthy and vibrant community connections and provides a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

We want to journey together with our community and we are consulting with a diverse range of stakeholders including individuals, businesses and organisations from the local community and Adelaide City.

Our first steps have been to understand our site constraints and opportunities and to complete a cultural mapping and information gathering. We are also exploring a range of funding options including partnerships. Our design team will then develop a number of options which will be shared with stakeholders for feedback. We anticipate presenting these options in late 2024.

The key outcome from the strategic property review will be to prepare a Business Case outlining the strategic direction for the site and a funding strategy to support the delivery of the project. This is expected to be completed in 2024.

In this first phase of the project, The Salvation Army will also be demolishing the former Linsell Lodge building and adjacent vacant 'Mud Drum' shop. Demolition is considered the only viable option given the safety issues associated with these buildings that are no longer fit for purpose. A staged demolition process is expected to take place from November 2023 - October 2024.

I don't see an issue of providing updates on the salvos site in this thread now :)

The balls of these people to describe a single house as "social housing". Disappointing that a large charity like the Salvos can own such a large parcel of land in the CBD and, until now, have done so little with it.

What are you talking about? There's a multi level apartment building on the site. There's an op shop and there's a temp homeless shelter for drunks.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe dsriggs is referring to the federation cottage on the corner. Its a single level home with quite a sizable yard. The last time I saw it in person it had extensive fire damage to its rear roof. Hopefully it can be restored and still used as a home.

The fire is the reason it is being demolished so unfortunately there are no plans for it to be refurbished.

Well when I was across the street at John Does local bar a couple of years back, the individuals coming in and out of the fire damaged residence certainly weren’t a desirable addition to the area and was looking rather worse for wear.
Not trying to be negative to the less fortunate, just saying that what’s the point of providing social housing in a historical building if it’s not going to be respected and able to be admired for what it is.

I assume this wider problem was the ultimate downfall of the Enzo Caroscio designed apartment building just next to this section of the square.

Hopefully this development cleans up the square whilst also providing social housing in one form or another.

There's been problems for years in whitemore square with undesirables and drunken behaviour hasn't there?
Wasn't aware it was related to the salvos owning a site there.
