I just noticed that postcard has a very rare photo of the construction of the Hungry Jack's carpark in the background.

I just noticed that postcard has a very rare photo of the construction of the Hungry Jack's carpark in the background.

I think it's actually looking West towards King William Street, but I'm not sure what's under construction.

The above picture is definitely that of the intersection of Rundle and Gawler Place, where the fountain was until 1995. The camera looks east - you can see John Martin’s (now DJ’s) and on the right Regent Arcade. Probably taken winter 1977 judging by the green looking hills and the mall’s young trees - the mall opened 1976. It almost certainly is the brutalist car park under construction in the distance.

It’s not brutalist.

You can also see the ride that used to be on top of the building and can just about make out the old escalator and bridge.

Expected signage mid-2023, similar move in date for 200 RAA workers to the building.

It's definitely the 1980's mid to early at least, Westpack was known as the bank Of New South Wales in the 70's, and there is the contemporary Westpack signage on the building in that photo. I think it changed it's name in 1981.

It's definitely the 1980's mid to early at least, Westpack was known as the bank Of New South Wales in the 70's, and there is the contemporary Westpack signage on the building in that photo. I think it changed it's name in 1981.

the COX FOYs signage and amusement park is still there, that closed in 1977.

the gentleman wearing flares...nobody, but nobody wore flares in the 1980s, not even people with old clothes... you wouldn't be caught dead in public with them until they made a brief comeback at turn of the century

the first response said 1977, I'd say that is about right.

the bank of NSW used a similar logo to Westpac Bank, however Westpac was more curvaceous this example is straight edged

as someone who lived through the 70's and 80's, there's nothing I can see in that photo that is recognisable from the early 80's

A rare view of this building without logos - I think this is only the fourth time in the building's lifetime. (From State Bank to Sturt's desert pea, from that to Santos, from Santos to Westpac, and from Westpac to RAA). I like the renders with RAA signage - the white and yellow goes well with the granite.

Agree with that, the raa render looks good. The desert pea was the best at night. The old state bank signage looked dire not just for the aesthetic but for the utter failure it represented.

Incidentally, the designer of both the State Bank and the original BankSA logo (the desert pea one), Ian Kidd, passed away last week.

Definitely looking east in that postcard because we can see the Hills, unless there was an unscientific tsunami about!
