I don't know why the Advertiser has not made a big fuss, about this, but I came across these statistics from the ABS today, and they show that SA has recorded the strongest population growth that I can personally remember. At 1.0% growth we recorded a higher per-capita growth rate than NSW. THis means that to the end of the Dec 2006 quarter, the state's population grew by 16 100. There is still a long way to go, but these figures are very promising, and they show that we are on the right track to a bright future.

We are still dragging further behind every other state except NSW (which was only 0.1% diff) and TAS which scares me.

The true boomers are QLD and WA.

We haven't really experienced any boom as of yet and wont happen for a while.

You are analyzing the results in the wrong way. If you remember our 0.4% population growth recorded in the late 1990s, which is less than 10 years ago, but furthermore remember that for example in 1999, our population only grew by 5 000 people, then you may see why I'm happy.
If someone had said back in 1999 that in less than 10 years our population would be growing at 16 100 per annum, people would have thought you were crazy.

Well I see your point as to how a boom is not too far away, however what I am instating is that what if that was our "mini boom" and things will go back to what it was before or stays as it is. This is what scares me as it seems that Australia in a whole is growing rapidly as a nation fast, with good old adelaide remaining the Green-Natural city and staying as it is.

Sydney: 5.2-6.3mill

Melb: 4.5- 5.8 mill

Brisbane: 2.7-4.2 mill

Perth: 2-3 mill

Adelaide: 1.1-1.3 mill

So 'Will' I hope the trends you have found continue to rise higher cos this is what the ABS are saying, which is what is scaring me.

What scares me is your negativity. I have presented current statistics from last year. I did say that there was still a long way to go, but I find it a bit sad (but it's not surprising, negativity is still rampant here) that you have gone to find population projections that were made 5-6 years ago, when our growth rate was half of what it is today. Old population projections will represent the reality of that time. I await to see the new population projections based on last years census.

Dont take any notice of these predictions. There's no way anyone can accurately predict population
growth over a period of 50 years !!!

Nobody knows what's going to happen in the future in terms of the economy, environment, overseas
migration etc. I bet you that 50 years ago nobody predicted the boom that's going on in WA / Perth at the
moment

Jimmy, this is a great outcome for SA.

While it is small compared to interstate, but the gap is closing in between SA and the other states. We have just passed NSW for higher per-capita growth rate - that is something to be proud of.

These population figures are getting better every time they are released, when you compare the states growth of just around 5,000 (0.4-5%) when the state was going nowhere to now 16,100 (1.0%) its a pretty big thing to be happy about. Though most of the population growth has happened in the last few years.

Also don't bother with the ABS predictions they are usually BS as no can predict the future. Though using these current figures SA's population will be 2,268,000 by 2050 (increase of 692,300) which smashes the State Governments target of 2 million by 2050. Though with the population growth rate getting higher all the time now, more confidence in Adelaide & SA and with the defense and mining boom starting to began - I'm pretty sure SA's population will be much bigger by 2050.

No don't get me wrong thinking I am thinking negative. I only just hope that the gap does close and that the ABS stats are proven wrong.

We are not there yet, but nonetheless it is good to see improvement in our figures.

That's the way I'd see it, anyway. That things are getting better, but there's still lots of room for improvement.

So it's a positive thing.

I found a document titled "South Australian Yearbook 1998' which is published by the ABS. Having a quick read of the book indicates why the current statistics are significant and a spositive sign for SA.

It stated amongst other things:

The last time that SA has a population growth rate above 1.0% was in 1976!, however in 1991 we did record a 0.99% growth rate

However we started going downhill after 1992.

1992 - 0.71% (10 213 people)

1993 - 0.29% (4162 people)

1994 - 0.37% (5454 people)

1995 - 0.22% (3291 people) (In 1995 we had a net interstate loss of -7069 people)

1996 - 0.33% (4824 people)

1997 - 0.38% (5553 people)

The document goes on to say that from 1993-97, SA had the lowest growth rate of all states and territories.

From memory, this remained the case for 1998 and 1999. When our growth rate reached 0.5% in 2000, we had caught up with Tasmania and had the equal lowest growth rate in Australia.


Another interesting thing about this document are the population projections from that era. The ABS always presentes 3 series.

The most optimistic Series (Series I) predicted that the states population would peak in 2031 with 1.62 million, and then decline to 1.55 million by 2051.

The most pessimistic series (Series III) on the other hand predicted that the state's population would peak in 2011 with 1.496 million, and then decline to 1.197 million by 2051.

These figures were prepared with the population growth rates of 1996.

Just a thought here, could you imagine the NIMBYS when our pop hits 2 mill, and developments keep pouring into this city eg motorways, skyscrapers etc!!!

They will have to expand glenside cos they will be slitting their wrists and going mental!!! hahaha

Or maybe they will move to newcastle and fuck up the progress of that city..hahaha

Most NIMBY's will proabably have passed away by then anyway.

Yes last year of the GP too.....

those recent statistics are very optimistic. i am pleased to hear of the good news, and i have great confidence that the rate will only continue to increase to 20, mabye 25k a year.
