Oh geez that new facade of the Myer centre looks shockingly boring. Why is everyone so obsessed with grey these days? Back in the 1950's through to the 70's, colour was everywhere. Now, its all grey, black and white. Very depressing.

I believe there's meant to be a set of metallic bronze/champagne vertical feature awnings above the facade too. Should break up the charcoal

I think it’s more of a case of Calibre trying to be more accessible for their target eastern suburbs shoppers (especially with Burnside Village currently undergoing its massive upgrade). That said, Rundle Street in the past 12-months has become tenanted by more and more high end retailers which might seem like a good thing but it’s shoving out the more frequented smaller niche retailers and subsequently killing the daytime hospitality trade. Rundle Street during any given weekday is a ghost town.

Shoppers in Adelaide may soon be able to get their hands on prestige brand watches by the likes of Rolex, TAG Heuer, Patek Philippe and Hublot at a new luxury retailer in Rundle Mall.

Billionaire property magnate Shaun Bonett has stepped up the revamp of his retail asset in Adelaide, to meet pent-up demand from cashed-up locals and visitors.

His Precision Group has ­secured The Hour Glass specialty watch group for its Adelaide Central Plaza in the CBD. The group also owns Port Adelaide Plaza.

It will be the first outlet in South Australia for The Hour Glass, and is slated to open in May 2024. The 209sq m boutique will face Rundle Mall and showcase multiple luxury watch brands.

Mr Bonett said Adelaide was increasingly attractive to luxury brands due to an increase in flights from overseas and also relatively buoyant local foot traffic.

“The demand for flagship boutiques is being fuelled by workers returning to CBDs and a resumption of international tourism, as retailers tap into the continued demand for experience-based, physical stores,” Mr Bonett said.

“And what you’re finding with these big international brands is a lot of the larger countries that have fuelled their growth over the last decade, like China or Russia, are no longer doing as well.

“So they’re needing to find new places, and are doubling down on jurisdictions they consider offer the greatest level of stability. Like Australia.”

Mr Bonett is spending about $125m over three years to develop Adelaide’s first luxury retail precinct on Rundle Mall, which has included Louis Vuitton opening up a successful temporary pop-up store.

Initial plans had the Louis Vuitton store operating until December 28, but Mr Bonett would like its parent company LVMH to extend that.

In the meantime, he has struck a deal with The Hour Glass to join the likes of luxury retailers Tiffany & Co and TAG Heuer at Adelaide ­Central Plaza.

“Luxury brands look to position themselves as close to their peer brands as possible. It’s all about location. That is the fundamental piece of the puzzle and is … what we are trying to deliver,” Mr Bonett said.

Other global brands near Adelaide Central Plaza include Apple, Sephora and R. M. Williams, which opened a flagship store in August. Prestige watch brand Breitling Oceania has also just opened its first Breitling Boutique in Adelaide’s King William St.

Mr Bonett said that Adelaide had “basically avoided much of the pandemic”.

“There’s an appeal to go to the CBD for their own residents, as well as attracting a higher number of tourists,” he said.

Adelaide was considered a “hidden jewel”, he said. “When they travel they tend to spend more (on luxury goods).”

Precision Group was unable to name other luxury brands it was in talks with for Adelaide ­Central Plaza because it was confidential commercial information.

They're idiots. The quest to 'modernise' it has turned the Myer Centre facade into generic piece of crap. However, I remain grateful that Rundle Mall as a whole is so much better-looking and lively than it was years ago.

Completely disagree. There’s nothing lovely about the current Rundle Mall. The Christmas decorations look as though the ACC sent their events intern down to Cosco to buy up the remainder of the previous year’s Christmas stock (inflatable Santa’s, really? I thought it couldn’t get worse that plastic Christmas trees). The mall itself at any other point of the year is void of character, the fact that they adopted the ‘pop’ up model of stall holders only now to revert back to a of regular roster of semi-permanent stalls that might as well be permanent bricks and mortar structures like they were. The only benefits to come from the mall upgrade was the uniformity of trees and repaving (even if the pavers are shockingly dull). Somewhat hoping that Jane Lomax Smith will address some of these issues during her term as Mayor.

Hard disagree. I think the Mall looks miles better than the previous iteration, especially now that the trees have had some time to grow. Expectations around Christmas decorations are always misplaced — most decorations rely on livening up dark and cold spaces, hence lots of lights and sparkly things. Christmas shopping hours for the Mall are when it's typically drenched in Summer sunlight.
