I saw gum trees in South Africa, In fact on the coach trip between Nelspruit and Jo'burg I fell asleep and at one stage I woke up and with sleep filled eyes looked out the window to the side of the highway and I could have sworn I was in Australia, until I saw a zebra under a gum tree;)

Just for the record, I like the gum trees on the riverbank and have no problem with them. I think their irregular shape compliments the stark lines of the Festival Theatre beautifully, and I have no problem with it looking like the buildings were built between the trees - makes it look like more thought was put into the design. I'm sure there are more people thinking like me too.

Just because I like the diversion to trees, there's so many gum trees in California that were imported as wind breaks for farms, that some locals think they are native.

i just noticed the master plan includes a River West hotel. It's location would result in increased daily foot traffic through the riverbank precinct.

Maybe a chance of a 20+ storey building?

Is that building really a hotel? From the images available at their Facebook page, it doesn't look very inspiring. All it looks like is a barrier set up to separate the bridge from the rail yards below. Wouldn't it be better to have a small plaza off the Morphett Street Bridge and set the buildings back a little? Maybe with a 20+ storey hotel somewhere as suggested? Besides there is plenty of room to build over the yards going west and they could easily add a few other attractions to lure people there. Some ideas that came to mind: a museum of SA history, a media arts gallery, a gallery of Aboriginal arts and artefacts, etc. Of course these could also be suitable as replacements for the current RAH site -- unless they retain part of the old hospital for extra beds or demolish everything and turn that into an extension of the Botanic Gardens...

surely is according to the full master plan published Nov 2011.

Just me dreaming about 20+ storeys though. This render shows ~10 at most.

Not quite. Hotels go hand-in-hand with Convention Centres. By the way, you also have an entertainment precinct, casino, railway station, Adelaide Oval, hospital, university and shopping and not to mention the Torrens, parklands, tennis courts and Nextgen all close by. I think you couldn't ask for more, could you?

Answer this with Nort's question about the railyards. Not me in particular, but yes, some would pay for it and I can understand why. I guess watching trains coming and going is therapeutical to some. You could compare it to something built next to water where there's movement, like ships, yachts and boats, even lights reflected in water at night. Or built around a pedestrian square where people walk and interact. Are my analogies correct? Have I made sense?

Western side of the Intercontinental has views of those majestic train tracks already...

I really don't like what they are doing with it to be honest. They are keeping the old hotel, and adding some modern glass boxes in front fronting North Tce.
Good opportunity to demolish the existing hotel and build something modern and glassy with curves.
