Yes the external design is awful but to be fair I think the oft-repeated argument over student rooms being too small is a bit misguided.

It's bigger than my room in university halls back in the early 00s and that was more than adequate for a place to sleep and study for a year or so. Plus I imagine the communal spaces in a building like this will be far, far better than I had back in the day - essentially a small TV room (4 channels) and a kitchen with an electric hotplate, fridge and toaster. Just look at what's on offer in The Switch for example - gym, laundry, modern kitchens, games room, balcony with BBQ etc.

New residential apartments being too small? Yes, I can agree with that. But I really don't think it's an issue with student accommodation - they're cheap (compared to private renting or buying) places to stay on a very temporary basis and I don't think any students expect or need anything bigger.

People who never studied abroad and or lived in a student dorm are never going to understand that these rooms are for staying in during a semester during the period of your life you're focused on nothing but studying. The people in this building aren't here to throw a shrimp on the barbie.

I agree with others that a site at the entry to the CBD deserves a building with much better architecture. Build this on a site where its 2/3s hidden by other buildings, sure, who cares. A landmark site deserves better

The original proposal obviously raised hopes, and certinaly Brown Falconer continue to serve mediocre. But it's not as criminal as some are making out, and as a product, it's probably on the more 'generous' side in terms of shared amenity than most student accom. After flicking through, a concern I have is whether the perforated screening on the car park will actually do much to shield it from view — because replacing the ground level car park is probably its best contribution.

After flicking through, a concern I have is whether the perforated screening on the car park will actually do much to shield it from view — because replacing the ground level car park is probably its best contribution.

The street frontage is basically a slip lane from a bridge. It never was, never should be activated in any sense. I take your point but in terms of what it does to the street, it's not the end of the world in that location.

My concern is not with activation. I support the approach they’ve taken with landscaping the ground plane - that’s the best you could hope. I don’t even mind the car parking levels. I wouldn’t want to look out at Morphett Road from that vantage; but equally, I don’t think we should see into the car park. The screening looked as though it would be more open than opaque.

Prominent location like that, they can do better then student accommodation.
Student accommodation aside, it's a shit design for a prominent location.

This thing is going to stand out badly coming into the city from the west on North Terrace and Henley Beach Road, from the north along Montefiore road, and even coming in from the south along Waymouth probably even beyond the Grote St intersection.

Brown Falconer are without any doubt the worst architectural firm this city has to offer. May I remind those who aren't aware that they were behind The Switch on North Terrace, Adeladean and Y-Suites on Waymouth. Even their 'wins', for instance Samaras' Franklin Street development that's U/C, they provided only the one side of the building with entirely windows and the remainder dominated by concrete. Single-handedly, this firm have destroyed Adelaide's skyline with terrible design work, fuck them off into an abyss.
