Interesting, I wonder how they're going to expand - is that lot between University Parade and Light Common still vacant?

I used to work up at Mawson Lakes, I remember when the town centre first opened. A more design-oriented friend of mine pointed out that the centre of the "town centre" was a carpark; he lamented them not spending the extra money to sink the carparking underground and having that area available for something else - something that a town could actually treat as a centre. Looking at the satellite images of the area you get a very strong impression of how much space around there is taken up by carparking - around the town centre, the university, and the office buildings. I guess this new place will follow suit *sigh*

Mawson Lakes by its very isolated location is doomed to be car oriented. It's by no means capable of being completely self sufficient. People still need to get to their places of work and etc. The PT available (rail & bus) does do an okay job, but only in a couple of directions.

Satellite developments like this are car oriented. As your friend lamented, hiding the car parking might brighten the space a little. But the crime associated with hidden spaces is a deterrent to developers.

I suspect the cost was the prevailing issue. If Delfin really believed that, they wouldn't have included the tiny laneways throughout the medium density area.

The Bill is on ABC1 tonight at 8:30

But it is true, when all the current Mawson toddlers are teenaged, they'll do most of their petty crime'in in hidden places. With cries of "there's nothing here for us kids to do!" as they spray a wall. Just the normal cycle of life in the PT starved suburbs.

It's on the western side of Mawson I/C, towards Salisbury highway. Haven't seen much of a river there though...

allowed the town centre to be. The Mawson Lakes Train station should have been underground and the City Centre
above and around it. As current you have to walk 5 minutes to the town centre and if your going to tech park you
probably have a good 15 minute walk as there is no circle/feeder bus servicing the area.

I get the feeling that the TOD thing was just an afterthought. Remember Mawson Lakes was designed a long time ago and if they were doing it again now it would almost certainly be centered around the station.

Mawson Lakes whilst ok, could have been a lot lot better. For one the Council and Government got it wrong were they allowed the town centre to be. The Mawson Lakes Train station should have been underground and the City Centre
above and around it.

The high water table would make tunnelling a bit difficult, but there's a much bigger problem than that: it's not just the TransAdelaide line there, but also an interstate freight line with a much larger loading gauge (some trains on it have double stacked containers) and the N end of Dry Creek railyard (so there are several large loading gauge tracks). So putting it underground would be very expensive.

Also, putting the town centre above the railway (whether the railway is underground or not) would mean it was further from the university. With hundreds of staff and thousands of students, it makes sense for shops and restaurants to be near it.

Although there is no longer a circle bus, other bus routes are fairly effective at performing the feeder function.

Tech Park would be even further from the town centre if it were centred on the station. And if you're suggesting diverting the railway to a station under the existing town centre, that would be significantly longer and therefore slower for all the through passengers, so that's a non starter.

But as it is, the town centre is expanding towards the station anyway.

They built the university in no-mans land, and now the town centre was built to be close to the uni. Two wrongs dont
make a right....
